Preveli Monastary located south of Rethymno is one of Crete’s most beautiful monasteries. It was built around the 16th century and time has left its marks during the course of time. Placed among the windswept, rugged mountains of the south it gives you the feeling of a green oasis of serenity and peacefulness. Preveli Monastery is an architectural masterpiece and a true ambassador to the Orthodox architecture with literally breathtaking sea views. In the main church of Katholikon (which was built in 1836) and in the monastery’s museum you will find rare and valuable icons from the orthodox iconography school. Preveli beach and the lagoon which can only be described as a collage of many beautiful paintings brought together in perfect harmony is located not far from the monastery.
